Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
The United Nations has adopted and ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The Convention is a human rights instrument with an explicit social development dimension. It reaffirms that all persons with all types of disabilities must enjoy all human rights and fundamental freedoms on an equal basis with others.
In short the convention states that Persons with disabilities have the rights:
- of equal access to services and information,
- to education,
- to health care,
- equal recognition before the law,
- freedom from exploitation and abuse,
- being included in the community,
- to work and employment,
- to adequate standard of living and social protection
Our role Dark & Light stands up for the equal rights of people with a disability in developing countries.
We support disabled people’s organisations in developing countries to strive for equal rights through advocacy and lobby. We support local government and development organisations to make their services and programs accessible for people with a disability. |
