08-06-2010 | Training on disability mainstreaming very worthwile
Dark & Light, in cooperation with the Ethiopian Center for Disability and Development (ECDD), has organised a training for 4 East-African organisations that work in the field of disability and development.
The objective of this training, which lasted one week, was to talk and learn about how to make other development organisations’ work more inclusive for persons with disabilities. In the upcoming years, D&L, ECDD and these four other organisations would like to cooperate and set up such ‘mainstreaming disability services’ in their respective countries. They will provide training, facilitation and advice to government departments, development NGOs and businesses, so that these become aware of the needs and rights of disabled persons. This way, many more persons with disabilities can be reached in development and societies will become more inclusive, in adherence to the United Nations Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
From Dark & Light, Sander Schot and Vera Hendriks attended the training in Ethiopia and facilitated some of the sessions. They found the week very worthwile, and have met with some truly inspiring people!
