Organisation mission statement The Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology (KCCO) is dedicated to the elimination of avoidable blindness through the integration of programmes, training, and research focusing on the delivery of sustainable and replicable community ophthalmology services.
Target group Children with low vision in 13 regions of Tanzania (total population about 21 million)
Project purpose Improve the visual capacity and quality of life of children with irreversible low vision (or blindness) in 13 regions of Tanzania. Build the capacity of government and NGO staff to manage the low vision needs of these children. Assist partners throughout Africa to develop strategies necessary to include low vision services in their VISION 2020 programmes.
Targets Description
- 8 Regions in northern Tanzania now included in the low vision programme (Kagera Region, pop 2.5million added)
- 4 Training of optometrists in low vision (one each from KCMC and CCBRT and two from Mbeya Referral.
- 1 Establishment of (node) for low vision programme in southern Tanzania (at Mbeya)
- 450 children at the 15 schools for the blind/annexes in northern Tanzania who receive follow up screening,
spectacles, low vision devices.
- 200 Children in the 8 regions of northern Tanzania newly enrolled in low vision service.
- 150 Teachers in northern Tanzania who receive training (some upgrade) in how to assist low vision children
- 8 Optometrists in northern Tanzania who receive training (some upgrade) in now to assess low vision and how to
provide basic low vision services.
